Are you experiencing pain or burning while urinating? Chances are, you have a urinary tract infection (UTI). Many women experience a UTI, in fact, the National Kidney Foundation reports that over 50% of women have had at least one UTI in their lifetime. Because this infection is so common, it is important to know what it is, how to treat them and how to prevent future infections.
What is a UTI?
A UTI happens when bacteria enters the urethra and infects the urinary tract. Bacteria often comes from the skin or the rectum. It travels up the bladder and colonizes the urethra, migrates into the bladder and causes inflammation.
Common symptoms include:
- Pain or burning while urinating
- Frequent urge to urinate
- Bloody urine
- Pressure or cramps in the lower abdomen
How do you treat a UTI?
UTIs are treated with antibiotics. If you are experiencing symptoms, make an appointment with your healthcare provider who can confirm the diagnosis and prescribe you with the right antibiotic.
During treatment, remember to:
- Drink plenty of water and fluids
- Take antibiotics as prescribed
- Finish all the prescribed medication, even if you feel better
How do you prevent a UTI?
Because women have shorter urethras that are closer to the rectum and the genital area, it is important to keep the area clean. To avoid bacteria entering the urethra, follow these recommendations:
- Wipe from front to back after using the toilet
- After sex, urinate as soon as possible
- Change sanitary or incontinence pads regularly
- Use cotton, or breathable material, underwear
- Do not use scented or fragranced soap
- Avoid douching or applying sprays or powders on the genitals
